An individual trainer for giving students in the radar intercept observer (RIO) schools concentrated practice in procedures for air-to-air intercepts was designed around a programmable graphics terminal with two integral minicomputers and 8k of core memory. The trainer automatically administers practice in computing values of variables in the intercept triangle, and in making the turns required to put the fighter into position for a sidewinder attack. In an initial field trial at the RIO school, Glynco, Georgia, each of 29 students received 10 hours of practice on this trainer. Data for the values of 33 variables were automatically recorded and were analyzed. It was concluded that this form of computer assisted instruction does produce worthwhile gains in fluency of performance and understanding of the intercept problems. (Author)

Two-way radio communications between air traffic controllers using radar on the ground to give airplane pilots instructions are of interest within the developing framework of the sociology of language. The main purpose of air traffic control language is efficient communication to promote flight safety. This study describes the standardized format of one part of routine two-way radio communications--the approach to the airport to land. (Author)

Fundamentals of major electronic equipments on board ships are presented in this text prepared for naval officers in general. Basic radio principles are discussed in connection with various types of transmitters, receivers, antennas, couplers, transfer panels, remote-control units, frequency standard equipments, teletypewriters, and facsimile installations. Theoretical and practical analyses are made of radar and sonar equipments to show their capabilities and limitations. On the subject of electronic navigation, loran, shoran, omega, tacan, and satellite and ships' inertial navigation systems are presented. Also included are descriptions of digital computers, gun and missile weapon systems, direction finders, closed-circuit television sets, electronic countermeasures, communication console equipments, underwater telephones, intrared and meteorological setups, carrier control approach systems, radiac instruments, and target control installations. Illustrations for explanation purposes and a glossary of general terms are included. (CC)

The subject matter of this training manual is prepared for regular navy and naval reserve personnel. Operations of gyrocompasses and magnetic and magnesyn compasses are discussed with a background of error determination, compass adjustments, and degaussing applications. Navigation techniques are analyzed in terms of piloting, dead reckoning, determination of celestial lines of position, and radar, loran, consol, decca, and omega systems. To train the reader as an assistant to either a navigator or an officer of the deck (OOD) or a junior officer of the deck (JOOD), further explanation is made of ship handling, weather maneuvering, and OOD, JOOD, and navigator duties. Information on rules of the road, publications for navigation use, rating structures, and administration of records and reports is also provided. Besides illustrations for explanation purposes, an edited reprint of the reverse side of the June 1966 pilot chart of the North Atlantic is included in the appendix. (CC)

The research reported consists of eight tasks, four concerned with manned systems research and four with human resources research. Although each task is basic in the sense that it seeks results of a broadly generalizable nature, each is specifically relevant to one or more well-known and long-standing Air Force problems. The handbook covers a comprehensive series of Job-Task Performance Tests for the Doppler Radar (AN/APN) and its Associated Computer (AN/ASN-35). The test series has been developed to measure job performance of the electronic technician. These tests encompass all phases of day-to-day preventative and corrective maintenance that technicians are responsible for in their respective repair activities. Instructions for test administration and student instructions are included. (Author)

This dictionary presents definitions of both the well-established terms and many new ones that have come into use with the advances that have taken place in the fields of radio and television. In many cases extended definitions are given in order to describe briefly elementary principles and circuits, while newer and more complex devices and systems are described in even greater detail where necessary to make clear the underlying principles or modes of operation. S ubjects extensively covered include: radiotelephones and radiotelegraphy; monochrome and color television; facsimile transmission; radio direction finding; receivers and transmitters; transistors; semiconductor and thermionic devices; audio and high fidelity reproduction; aerials, transmission lines, and waveguides; microwave techniques and tubes; communication satellites; propagation; television cameras; measuring instruments; and general electrical and radio terms. Also included are basic terms in the fields of radar, radio navigation, radio astronomy, studio equipment, and lasers. To supplement the definitions, a list of technical abbreviations is appended together with several useful tables. (JY)

A training module was developed for each of the following equipments: Radar, radio receiver, LORAN receiver, and transmitting set. The student is guided through an analytic process by answering a series of carefully structured questions designed to guide him through a complete analysis of the equipment for both understanding and troubleshooting. Training emphasis is not on theory but on the practical applied aspects of maintenance through the use of technical manuals and hands for the repair of equipment failures. This is the fifth in a series on shortened versions of the Avionics Fundamentals and Aviation Electronics Technician R (Radar) Courses. The first four studies indicated that the initial revisions of the courses led to substantial savings in training time, but that the graduates from the revised courses were slightly inferior to graduates from the original courses on several criteria. It was decided that shortened versions of both courses should be implemented on an operational basis, but that these courses should incorporate certain changes that had been suggested by experience with the first revisions. These changes led to courses that were not quite as short as those produced in the first revision. It was found that students in the 8.5 week version of the Aviation Electronics Technician R (Radar) course did just as well as students in the original 10.8 week version of the course. Students in the 16 week version of the Avionics Fundamentals course were found to be slightly inferior to students in the original 19 week version. (authors/ly)

THREE PRECEDING REPORTS PRESENTED THE EFFECTS OF SHORTENING TRAINING TIME IN AVIONICS FUNDAMENTALS AND AVIATION ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN (RADAR) TRAINING UPON THE FINAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION IN THESE COURSES AND UPON PERFORMANCE IN A SUBSEQUENT EQUIPMENT COURSE. THIS REPORT COMPARES THE ON THE JOB PERFORMANCE OF GRADUATES FROM FOUR GROUPS MATCHED ON THE BASIS OF GRADES MADE IN A SHORT COURSE TAKEN PRIOR TO TRAINING IN AVIATION ELECTRONICS. EACH GROUP RECEIVED DIFFERENT LENGTHS OF TRAINING. IN GENERAL, FLEET PERFORMANCE WAS AFFECTED BY THE LENGTH OF TRAINING--THE LONGER THE TRAINING, THE BETTER THE PERFORMANCE. SHORTENING THE FUNDAMENTAL ELECTRONICS COURSE APPEARED TO AFFECT ON THE JOB PERFORMANCE MORE THAN SHORTENING THE EQUIPMENT COURSE. HOWEVER, THE FUNDAMENTALS COURSE WAS FIVE WEEKS SHORTER WHILE THE EQUIPMENT COURSE WAS THREE WEEKS SHORTER. WHILE THE GROUPS DIFFERED ON THE FINAL EXAMINATION ACCORDING TO THE LENGTH OF THE COURSE, THE DIFFERENCE IN SCORES WAS UNDEFINED IN TERMS OF ON THE JOB PERFORMANCE.
